DOZENS of people gathered in Stroud to discuss a scheme that helps people on low income by reimbursing their travel costs to hospital appointments.

The scheme is a national one that has been operating in Gloucestershire for some time, but research by Citizens Advice Stroud and Cotswold Districts showed that many people entitled to claim didn’t know about it.

Citizen’s Advice called a meeting on Friday November 27 which saw 25 people come together to discuss ways to promote the scheme and to improve its take up. These included representatives from the local health organisations, councils and community transport providers.

Sandi Sorell, deputy chief officer of Citizens Advice Stroud and Cotswold Districts, said: ‘Travelling to hospital can be a challenge, especially for elderly, sick or disabled people living in rural areas with no access to public transport.

“It can cost £30 or more for a round trip, which is a great deal for someone in receipt of a benefit such as Pension Credit.

“So getting these costs reimbursed can make a real difference to their lives and stop unnecessary worry.

“It is hoped that the improvements proposed today will mean that many more people who qualify will now receive this help.”

Chris, from Tetbury, said: “I used to claim at the general office at Gloucestershire Royal, then I thought the scheme had stopped as I didn’t see any information about it.

“I was seeing Citizens Advice Cotswold about a problem when Mary, a Citizen Advice adviser explained the scheme and helped me apply for a reimbursement of £28.44 for three appointments I attended.

“I am pleased the scheme is now mentioned on the back of the appointment letter and hope the hospitals will promote the scheme at outpatient clinics. I attended an appointment at Gloucester Royal on Tuesday but there were no forms near the clinics.

“I wasn’t able to walk all the way to the Tower Block to get a form because of my disability. I would prefer a cash reimbursement scheme because I often end up borrowing money to attend my appointments.

“Cash reimbursement would be particularly helpful as I have six more appointments between now and Christmas.”
