GILBERT the Gull is not a happy bird after Forest Green Rovers refused to allow the mascot to attend the New Year’s Day game at New Lawn.

The Torquay United mascot is angry after being told he cannot attend the clash with FGR.

Steve Jegat, who wears the costume, said: “All I want to do is entertain the fans, have a dance off with their mascot at half-time, have a kick about and high five everyone.

“Forest Green won’t give me clearance. It’s laughable.”

Mr Jegat claims FGR told him the mascot would be a 'security risk.'

A spokesman from FGR said: “Our standard policy at Forest Green Rovers is to not allow mascots from away clubs into the stadium.

“Our own Green Devil mascot is covered by the insurance policy in place at the club.”

It is not the first time the Torquay mascot has made the headlines.

Last year Gilbert was at the centre of controversy when he allegedly swore at supporters and gestured for a fight during a match against Grimsby Town.

The mascot denied swearing or gesturing at the fans during the incident.
