A COUNCILLOR fears Government cuts could lead to some of the district’s most iconic council-owned buildings being sold-off.
District councillor Simon Pickering, who represents the Slade ward for the Green Party, predicts there could be a fight in the next three years to save the Sub Rooms in Stroud, Stratford Park Leisure Centre and Dursley Leisure Centre from being sold-off by the council to raise cash.
“At some point in the next three years there is going to have to be a brutal discussion,” said Cllr Pickering.
“The council is already making savings wherever it can, there is virtually nowhere else it can save.
“People in Stroud will fight to defend these places if they are put up for sale.
“There are going to have to be some radical plans.”
Cllr Pickering also spoke about the issue on BBC Radio Gloucestershire on Tuesday morning.
He said that due to cuts in the Government’s revenue support grant, the council will have to raise extra cash from 2018/19.
The Sub Rooms is estimated to cost SDC around £250,000 per year, said Cllr Pickering.
