A MAN whose body was found in a canal in Amsterdam had his life taken 'by an act of violence', according to his employers.

Stroud Auction owners Nick and Lyn Bowkett employed 30-year-old Richard Cole as a valuer and expert in Oriental and Asian Art.

Lyn said: "We are all in shock. Completely unable to believe that we won't ever see Rich again.

"When he came to work for us as a freelance valuer in early 2011 he was nothing like most people’s idea of an auctioneer – only 25 with long hair and a beard, but we were amazed by his exceptional knowledge of Asian Art.

"He quickly went from strength to strength, becoming a confident, popular member of the team. He was never just a colleague, his easy going, generous nature meant that he was soon a valued friend to us all.

"Although Richard was often off travelling during the past 18 months or so, when he stepped back through the door, it was if he had never been away. Everyone was always so pleased to see him and hear his news and he enjoyed being back in the saleroom.

"Rich was probably the kindest and most generous person I had ever met. He would have done anything for any of the team here or for his friends outside the auction.

"We have all spent the past week trying to think positively.

"But to hear that his life has been taken by an act of violence is just devastating. We have no words to say exactly how we feel. Our thoughts are with his family."

Dutch police are investigating the circumstances around Mr Cole's death.

A spokesman from the commonwealth and foreign office said: "Authorities in the Netherlands have confirmed the death of a British national, who was initially reported missing in Amsterdam.

"We are providing the family with assistance and support at this difficult time.”

Mr Cole's girlfriend Alicia Marie said: "What has unfolded is unspeakable.

"The tragic loss of Richard is one we will never come to understand or get over.

"I have spoken with his family and close friends, I know we are all in disbelief that someone could do this."

A spokesman for the Dutch police said that they are still investigating what happened to him and how he got into the water.
