POLICE are urging dog owners to make sure that they keep their pets under control around livestock.

The reminder comes before the spring months see this year’s lambing season.

Gloucestershire police hope to prevent any instances of sheep worrying by dogs allowed to roam uncontrolled across farm land.

Sergeant Simon Clemett, rural environmental crime officer, said: “Walkers should always keep their dogs on a lead when crossing farm land and must stay to the designated footpath or right of way.

“At this time of year, when there are so many young lambs in the fields, it’s particularly important.

“Dogs don’t need to attack livestock to have a devastating effect.

“Stress resulting in death or injury can be caused simply by the presence of dogs.

“Please make sure that dogs are restrained on leads at all times in order to prevent any harm coming to livestock or your pets and please remember to ensure that all gates are properly secured after they have been used.”
