CBBC’s resident scientist will be using orange goo, fire and exploding cannons to prove that science is exciting during Festomane’s family fun day in Stroud.

Fran Scott will perform her flamboyant stage show Science Misadventures as part of the festival’s Creation and Innovation Revealed exhibition on Wednesday, February 17 at Stratford Park Leisure Centre.

Festomane is an annual celebration, now in its fourth year, of the current vibrancy and past history of the manufacturing and engineering sector within Stroud’s valleys and vale. The exhibition is the lively culmination of a week of events.

The mission of the children’s TV presenter is to prove that anyone can be a scientist or an engineer.

She hopes to show how manufacturing and engineering, a sector which employs over 24 per cent of people working in Stroud, is part and parcel of everyday life.

“I grew up as a farm girl in Yorkshire so I’m not your typical scientist, I’m just someone who has never lost their curiosity,” said Fran.

“This, along with my ability to call a spade a spade and my degrees in science, means that I can explain scientific principles in a jargon-free, accessible and accurate way.

“My ambition is to make science and engineering the norm and remove the intimidating facade from the subjects.

“I want to see everyone becoming a scientist or engineer.”

Fran’s show is packed with explosive experiments with plenty of opportunity for audience members of take part.

During the day there will be lots of other hands-on activities for people to try whatever their age.

Visitors will be able to programme a robot head to make it talk, create a new look for themselves by trying virtual cosmetic surgery on a 3D image of their head and shoulders and see if they can make a Lego robot run the furthest.
