In the run up to the Stroud District Council elections on May 5, the SNJ will be profiling each of the candidates standing in all 27 wards.

Each party candidate will give voters information about who they are, what their pledges are and why you should vote for them.

These profiles will be posted alphabetically by ward over the next week.

Today we feature Severn, Stonehouse, Stroud Central, Farmhill and Paganhill, Slade and Trinity.

Look back at previous articles throughout the week for wards A-R.

  • John Marjoram – Green Party

It is now thirty years since I was elected to the Council. One of two Greens first to be elected in the UK.

In retrospect I think that I was shoehorned in by the worry in consequent of the terrible accident at Chernobyl on the 26th April 1986. The effects of which are still being felt.

I am still passionate about Equality politics. Therefore I am concerned about the destruction of our public services by this Government and the growing gap between the rich and poor.

Further the financial stealth being used to privatise the NHS, which I witness closely, being on the Stroud Hospital “League of Friends committee for the District Council. These have direct implications for the people whom I represent in Trinity ward equally of course for the rest of country.

Looking at the bigger picture, thirty years ago climate change was just raising its head together with the discussion of finite resources of the planet Earth-In truth.

Environmental issues brought me into politics in the first place I firmly believe that problems like environmental desecration, austerity and pure greed cannot be solved in isolation in one country.

For they are replicated in nearly every country around the world. That is why the Green Party is an internationalist party and has a positive view on the EU. Working within the EU with other likeminded, radical people we can make a better Europe.

  • Ian Edmunds - Conservative

Ian lives at Stancombe, is married, has two dogs and has lived in the Stroud area for over forty-eight years.

He would work towards an achievable and realistic environmental strategy, based on a balanced approach regarding the sustainability of our natural environment and area of outstanding beauty against a pragmatic assessment of human requirements.

He does not support multiculturalism and believes all British people should strive toward a single integrated culture.

Ian is also against “political correctness” and taking offence over trivial issues.

Suppression of free speech is a sinister means of preventing enlightenment and democracy.
