AN ELDERLY couple have been rescued after being found trapped in an overturned car on the A46 this morning - after a crash last night.

The man, 87, and woman, 78, have been taken to hospital after they were found inside the silver Honda Jazz which left the road and overturned onto its side and landed in a ditch.

A police spokesman said:"Police were called at 10.10am today after a driver saw an overturned car on the A46 near Prinknash Abbey towards Cranham.

"When police arrived at the scene they found a car, a silver Honda Jazz, which had left the road and overturned onto its side and landed in a ditch.

"The car was not visible from the road.  The fire and ambulance services were called and two people were rescued from the car.

"They are an elderly man (87) and woman (78) from Churchdown.  They have both been taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital to be checked over.

"We understand from the driver that their car left the road at 8pm last night and the couple have been trapped in the vehicle overnight.

"It was extremely lucky that the couple were not seriously injured at the time of the incident and that their car was spotted this morning by a driver of a high sided vehicle who called the police.

"The Constabulary want to thank the driver who called the Force Control Room this morning."

Investigations are continuing as to the cause of the driver losing control of the car.

The road was closed and it’s hoped it will be open by 1.30pm however there is access to Prinknash Abbey.
