THE third and final phase of work to resurface Stroud High Street is due to be finished by the end of June.

After weeks of repaving work the project led by Gloucestershire County Council is nearing the halfway point in its 14 week revamp period.

The final middle section of brick paving on the high street is being placed with yorkstone flags between King Street and Kendrick Street.

Coloured surfacing is also being put in to match the material that has already been used at the top end of the street.

It follows public outcry about the poor standard of the paving and the quality of materials used by the contractors when the cobbles were previously removed and replaced in 2013.

The new mixture of paving, enhanced buff coloured surfacing and conservation kerbing has proved to be much more popular.

The work started on March 21, meaning a total of three months of disruption for traders and shoppers.

Stroud News and Journal:

During this final phase all shops and businesses are remaining open as usual with access along the high street remaining open for pedestrians at all times, except for two Sunday’s where the coloured surfacing will be laid.

This will be towards the end of the work and dates will be publicised nearer the time.

Local shops are arranging for their deliveries to take place early in the morning and later in the day as it will not be possible for vehicles to access the high street between 9am and 4pm from Monday to Friday.

Delivery vehicles will be allowed to access the top (southern) half of the high street via Kendrick Street.

This has made Kendrick Street two-way for the duration of the work and temporary road signs are in place to guide traffic.

Repaving work is currently underway in Bedford Street, so pedestrians are diverted via Kendrick Street and Threadneadle Street.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said, “The high street is going to look fantastic when it’s finished.

“While we get the work done we’ll do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum. Please remember to support the local shops and businesses which will be open as usual.”

Stroud Town Council and Stroud District Council have both helped to fund the work.
