AN aspiring set designer from Nailsworth has won a prize in a national competition for her quirky design of the Bucket’s house in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Former SGS College pupil Dora Furnival, 18, scooped up a Young Theatre Designers Award for her shabby chic theatre set model for the musical version of the Roald Dahl’ classic.

The 3D Fine Art and Design student created the 1/25 scale model of Charlie’s famous house as part of a competition organised by the West End production.

Her intricately painted design shows the tiny wooden one-room house, complete with Charlie himself and the bed his four grandparents sleep in.

Dora, who has a place to study her dream job of stage design at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff in September, said she was thrilled to win the prize.

Stroud News and Journal:

“It’s my dream to work in stage design so starting my course with this award is brilliant,” she said.

“I wanted to create a feeling of a really strangely shaped and crowded living space. So there are items hanging from the roof and bibs and bobs all over the walls.

“I also wanted winches with lower down props to the actors from the roof, adding to the sense of odds and ends left all over the house.”

She will now be treated to a VIP trip to London to meet the cast and see the award-winning West End show of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Dora will get to experience it from backstage, getting an exclusive look at how the world of Roald Dahl’s much loved story is brought to life.

The Young Theatre Design Award was open to 13-21 year olds across the UK and split into two separate categories: Set Design and Costume Design.

The judges included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory director Sam Mendes and producer Caro Newling.
