A SPEED camera van has been spotted on Minchinhampton Common this morning.

Police are clamping down on speeding drivers as cattle roam freely on the commons between May and October.

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire police said: "We are aware of community concerns over speeding on Minchinhampton Common, particularly with cattle on the commons through the summer.

"We hope this speed camera encourages drivers to reduce their speed in the area and raises awareness of the importance of obeying speed limits."

Drivers are being asked by safety groups to stick to an advisory 30mph limit across the commons while the cows are free roaming.

A cow and her calf were killed in collisions in May and eight cattle were killed on the commons last year, the same number as in 2014.

Inspector Andy Poole, of Stroud police, said police would be trying to raise awareness about speeding on Minchinhampton common after the collision in May.

Speed checks were carried out by police last month, with one driver recorded travelling at 54mph.
