Work experience at Stroud District Council
By Danielle Bradbury

  • Monday 10th July

On my first day at Stroud District Council I participated in a lot of tasks. I had a quick tour in the department I would be working in and I was fascinated by how big it was. I then wrote a press release for the popular game `Pokémon Go’ which I enjoyed. I also looked at two articles which were about the same story but were written for different newspapers – Stroud Life and Stroud News & Journal. I wrote a report on the differences and similarities between the two which I found interesting.

On my second day I had a great opportunity to have a tour of the different departments in Ebley Mill, I was intrigued by all the facts I was given. After that I wrote a press release about a ramp being placed in Sherborne House so residents could access outdoor facilities. I had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Lacey who is the Stroud Operations Manager for NKS. I was pleased by how much I improved my confidence in communicating with other people.

On my third day I was invited to visit local houses in Stroud that weren’t in good condition. Overall I visited three and I interviewed two staff: Zoe Whitehead who is a trainee contracts officer and Elaine Booth who is a contracts officer. They gave me loads of information which helped me write my report. It was interesting to know how much had to be done to the houses to make them sustainable.

On my fourth day I marked a lot of newspapers. I had to mark articles which mentioned Stroud district council. This was fascinating because I read a lot of articles which I haven’t done before. After that I finished writing my report on the houses I visited.

On my last day I had a feedback session with all the other work experience pupils. We discussed the good and bad about work experience. My positives were that I gained confidence in working with others and I loved meeting new people. I also liked trying new things and finding out what I love to do. The only negative I had was that I got lost but I managed to find my way back luckily! I have very much enjoyed working here and I found out that marketing and journalism is definitely the path I want to follow in the future. I would also recommend work experience at Stroud district council to other students.
