A DRUNK man stumbled out of his white van and racially abused and punched a young black man who was waiting for a bus in Gloucester.

The hate crime happened at about 10am on Saturday in Norbury Avenue, near its junction with Baneberry Way.

A group of people were standing at the stop when a white man in his 20s got out of a white van and approached them.

He appeared to be drunk and started verbally-abusing two of the waiting passengers, who were both black. He then punched one of them.

A 22-year-old local man was later arrested on suspicion of assault and racially-aggravated public order offences.

He has been bailed till September 28.

Police are also keen to trace the victim who was attacked. He was black and in his 20s and believed to be a Matson resident.

Any witnesses who have not already come forward, including any who were on the bus that arrived while the incident was happening, is asked to call 101, quoting incident 152 of 20/8/16.
