The 36th Amberey Guild Society weekend away visited Meon Valley Golf Club, Hampshire’s only PGA European tour venue, and enjoyed superb autumnal weather with short sleeves being the order each day.

The 18-hole course passes through an English oak forest, with tree-lined fairways, large bunkers and natural water hazards.

The format for the weekend was, traditionally, a stableford competition on the Friday, a medal competition on the Saturday and a pairs stableford better-ball on the Sunday.

The Friday competition was won by Martin Butt with 37 points followed by Ollie Price and Mark Anderson on 34, Lee Davis on 33 and Angel Ancona with 31. Ben Denley won the 'nearest the pin' and Russell Kirby was 'nearest the pin in 2'. Ben Denley recorded the only birdie 2.

The Saturday Medal Competition proved to be a challenge for most players, as reflected in the scores.

The determination of everyone to complete a card meant that most took over five hours for the round. Steve Lewis won the cup for Best Net (71), well ahead of Rob Shirley, Martin Bourne and Clive Hathaway.

Ben Denley won the cup for Best Gross (80), comfortably ahead of Martin Butt, Mark Anderson and Ryan Gannaway.

Rob Shirley won the 'nearest the pin' and was Ben Denley was 'nearest the pin in 2'. There were no birdie 2's recorded.

A growing familiarity with the course saw better scoring in the Sunday Pairs Competiton.

Clive Hathaway and Angel Ancona led the way with 41 points, just ahead of Mike Sansom and Andy Walker and Steve Lewis and Eddie Uzzell, both on 40, with Bob Maltby and Lee Davis on 37.

Mattie Watts won the 'nearest the pin' and Harry Lewis was 'nearest the pin in 2'. Birdie 2's were recorded by Rob Shirley, Martin Butt and Ryan Gannaway.

Ken Kirby, by unanimous acclaim, was awarded the ‘personality of the weekend’.

Thanks were expressed to Mike Sansom, Ray Stratford and Graham Hook for all their hard work in organising the weekend which again was a most successful one.
