STROUD District Council will debate the ‘unsatisfactory’ parliamentary constituency boundary changes tonight.

Cllr Steve Lydon’s proposal, seconded by Cllr Doina Cornell, aims to combat the boundary restructures which would see Stroud district lose Nailsworth to its neighbouring Cotswold constituency.

The motion, which will be debated on Thursday, 27 October would see Stroud would gain Quedgeley Fieldcourt and Quedgeley Severn Vale from Gloucester and lose Nailsworth and Minchinhampton to the Cotswolds.

Cllr Lydon said: “The council considers the Boundary Commission for England’s proposals to be unsatisfactory from a democratic representation and accountability viewpoint.

“It adds unnecessary complexity to election management arrangements.”

Stroud district would lose Berkeley, Cam East, Cam West, Dursley, Kingswood, Vale and Wotton-under-edge to form the new Dursley, Thornbury and Yate constituency, giving the region three MP’s rather than two.

The council’s counter proposition would see Bisley and Painswick shift from Stroud to the Cotswolds constituency, Kingswood and Wotton-under-Edge move from the Cotswolds to the new third constituency as well as Vale from Stroud.
