TRAVELLERS have been served with an enforcement notice after setting up a large camp in Cainscross Car Park in Stroud.

Some disgruntled residents phoned the police after five caravans, two motor homes, two vans and a car appeared on Sunday evening.

Stroud District Council are now working with officers to clear the car park by Wednesday afternoon.

Last month the council erected a two metre high height restriction barrier at the entrance specifically to stop travellers accessing the car park.

This padlocked barrier and gate could only be moved by the council and a few members of the public who had access to the keypad.

It is not yet known how the caravans were able to pass through the barrier.

A police spokeswoman said: “We have received a number of calls concerning travellers who moved onto the car park off Cainscross Road on Sunday.

“The illegal camp has more than six vehicles, which gives officers powers under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to serve a Section 61 order on the group, requiring it to leave the site by 3pm tomorrow.

“Officers have also notified Stroud District Council over possible damage to a keypad which operates a gate to the car park.”
