DARK clouds are once again looming over the future of Stroud’s local NHS services.

After a summer of meetings, rallies and protests Stroud Minor Injuries Unit is going to officially end its overnight care next week – putting an end to 24 hour treatment in the district for the first time in decades.

This week we also examine the mounting fears for the future of Stroud’s much loved Maternity Unit, after the shock financial meltdown of the Gloucestershire NHS Trust which runs it.

Anyone who has lived in Stroud for a while will remember the phenomenal and successful campaign to save it from closure back in 2006, when thousands took to the streets in protest.

While we’re not at that stage yet, it’s clear the Trust is going be faced with serious pressures to balance its books over the next few months and years, meaning all NHS services in the county will have to feel the squeeze.

If this situation worsens and the Trust is has no choice but to make cuts, the birth unit will inevitably be the low hanging fruit.

The community must make sure the future of his precious facility is secure for the next generation.

Stroud cannot lose another of its vital health care services – especially one it fought so hard to protect only a decade ago.
