THE car which killed an elderly cyclist in a tragic collision in Stroud yesterday had failed to stop for police moments earlier, it has been confirmed.

The red Saab had been driving through the narrow streets of Bisley Road when it hit the man near the junction with Horns Road.

Despite officers’ best efforts to save his life the man died at the scene shortly after.

The incident has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A spokesman said: “The car involved failed to stop for police shortly before the collision.

“The incident was referred to the IPCC. We are awaiting their decision on whether there will be an independent investigation.”

This is standard practice when an incident of this kind occurs.

Meanwhile, a 37-year-old woman arrested yesterday in connection with the crash has been released without charge.

But three men remain in custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 18-year-old man from Stonehouse, 36-year-old man from Stonehouse and 18-year-old man from Gloucester have not been charged.

Arrests were made after police searched the area with a helicopter and a dog unit.

The incident happened at 2.35pm when a red Saab 900 XS collided with an elderly man.

Officers performed CPR immediately and an air ambulance attended but the man couldn't be saved and died at the scene.

A red Saab was removed overnight. Witnesses reported seeing a mangled bicycle trapped under the car.
