PLANS to re-open the Bristol Road railway station in Stonehouse have been handed a boost after a new study was launched.
Gloucestershire County Council has teamed up with Bristol City Council to look at the possibility of increasing trains from Yate towards Gloucester, increasing the likelihood of stopping in Stonehouse more often.
The Bristol Road Station working group, set up by Stroud MP Neil Carmichael, is awaiting the results of the study which are due soon.
Consultation for the Stonehouse Neighbourhood Development Plan showed significant support from residents for the re-opening of the station, which would enable commuters to travel directly to Bristol and Birmingham.
Currently passengers have to change trains at either Gloucester, Cheltenham or Swindon.
Stroud MP Neil Carmichael has backed calls for the line to be re-opened, saying it would be a “vital factor” in bringing further economic growth and development to the district.
The Bristol Road station was on the Bristol and Gloucester railway between Haresfield and Frocester, opened in 1844 and renamed in 1951.It closed to passengers in 1965 and to goods the following year.
