POLICE have issued advice after reports of scam callers claiming to be from BT targeting residents in Nailsworth and Stroud.

Several residents have reported suspicious phone calls on the Nailsworth Chat and Information Facebook page, warning people to be aware of the scam.

Melissa Williams said she received a call from a man claiming to be from BT on Monday.

She was told there was a fault with her router which needed to be fixed and was told to type in a code on her computer to prevent being hacked.

"I then asked him just to confirm my name and address, details BT should have access to, to which the gentleman hung up," she wrote on the Facebook forum.

"I believe this to be someone trying to gain access to personal details via my pc."

Several people have reported similar suspicious phone calls, with the latest this morning in Stroud.

A police spokeswoman said: "Anyone who receives a suspicious scam call is urged to alert police on 101 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

"If you do not believe a call is genuine, end the call.

"When you hang up, wait at least five minutes before attempting to make another call to ensure you’re not reconnected to the offender, or use a different phone such as a mobile or neighbour's phone.

"Please remember to never give your PIN, security or bank details to anyone over the phone."
