A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after hitting a bollard and raised flower bed in Stroud on Sunday night.

The incident occurred on the corner of George Street and King Street at 10.30pm.

One bollard has been ripped out of the pavement and a metal raised flowerbed has been crushed.

The car careered into the pedestrian area outside Savers - an area which is often busy at night due to nearby takeaways and the taxi rank.

Staff from Stroud Town Council’s green spaces team cleared some of the debris and set up a cordon the following morning after the vehicle had been removed.

Gloucestershire County Council is sending a highways representative to examine the site to see if the damage poses any safety risk.

A spokesman for GCC said that if it doesn't pose a safety risk then repairs will not be a priority due to 'finite council resources'.

Drag marks can be seen for 20 metres down King Street towards the site.

Both the bollard and pavement are the property of the county council and the flower bed belongs to the town council's Green Spaces team.

Police attended the incident on Sunday and officers arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of driving while over the legal limit.

The man has been released on police bail until Thursday, January 12 pending further inquiries.
