OLYMPIC legend Eddie the Eagle landed in King’s Stanley to add to the festive cheer at a Christmas fair.

Michael Eddie Edwards, who lives in Woodchester near Stroud, came to King’s Stanley Primary School to judge the photo competition at the fair on Saturday.

Pupils from each class at the school took a photo and used an iPad app to turn it into a black and white photograph.

Hudson Field, in Year 2, and Hannah Pritchard, in Year 6, were judged the winners by Olympic skier Michael ‘Eddie’ Edwards.

Both receive a signed copy of the film, Eddie the Eagle, based on the popular skier’s life.

Derk van den Broek, head teacher at the school, said: “It was great to have Eddie supporting the fair.

“It was very generous of him to give up his time and he stayed for a good hour and a half mingling and having photos taken with visitors.

“The fair was excellent and very well-attended.

“Special thanks go to Kate Quarry of the PTFA who was key in organising the event.”

Children came along to meet Father Christmas in his magical grotto at the fair, while shoppers browsed a variety of stalls to grab a Christmas bargain.

All money raised from the event will go the PTFA and help the school. The total is still being counted.

Eddie the Eagle soared to fame as the first person to represent Great Britain since 1929 in the ski jumping at the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988, where he finished last.

He was self-funded and overcame a fear of heights, weight, long-sightedness and a lack of financial support.

Eddie attracted huge public support for his unorthodox approach and determination to succeed against all odds.
