PEMBROKESHIRE firefighters have been recognised for their incredible efforts at the service's annual 'celebrating success' awards.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service staff were once again recognised for their outstanding achievements and contribution to the community at the ceremony, held at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, on Wednesday, November 23.

This prestigious event, now in its sixth year, recognises the tremendous efforts made by colleagues on a daily basis to make the communities they serve safer places to live, work and visit.

The event was sponsored by companies including Mansel Davies & Son, and was hosted by BBC News presenter Sian Lloyd.

Among the winners were Tenby firefighters Billy Connor and Gary Slack, who entered the sea at Castle Beach to save two children.

The brother and sister had found themselves in difficulty 100m off shore in strong current and tidal swell conditions.

Billy swam to the aid of the brother and recovered him to the shore, before returning to assist Gary who was successfully keeping the sister afloat.

It was widely recognised by the RNLI crews that their swift, immediate actions this summer undoubtedly saved the lives of the two children.

Milford Haven Fire Station were the worthy winners of this year’s Station of the Year award for their work for the service and their community.

The crew have delivered a reading program at a local school, provided a crowd-pleasing safety demonstration at the town's Founders' Day in June, and developed a foam training package to new recruits.

The Station also hosts a breakfast club for infant classes at the station, and coffee mornings for the elderly in sheltered housing.

Cllr Wynne Evans, who nominated Milford Haven station for the award, said: "I was delighted to have been the person to nominate them, they are an outstanding crew, that goes above and beyond the call of duty at all times.

"This award is richly deserved."

Awards were also made to Tenby firefighter Nicky Rees, who was the deserving recipient of the Sports and Social Club Award.

Nicky is a renowned triathlete and has a lifelong friend – Gareth Scotcher, who is diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Nicky raises funds to help make his friend’s life a little easier with special disability adaptations for his home.

In 2014, Nicky swam 1.6 miles in the sea, cycled 112 miles and ran 26 miles with Gareth attached to him.
