A BAKER is turning his hand to a weightlifting challenge in a bid to raise awareness about mental health.

Sam Beard, 20, from Stroud, is taking on a 30-day challenge in an attempt to lose as much body fat as possible and gain muscle mass at the same time.

Sam, a well-known runner, is using the challenge to raise awareness about mental health after he was diagnosed with depression and severe anxiety earlier this year.

After being forced to take a break from running, Sam made his return in September and is now aiming to end the year on a high.

“I’m determined to finish the year off on a positive and raise awareness of mental health,” said Sam, who is training at the Priory Gym in Tetbury for the challenge which he started last Friday.

“I want to show that despite suffering depression this year I’ve came back stronger and beat my demons and at the same time I hope to show people what is possible in 30 days with a perfect mindset.

“I have big plans for 2017 and I want to return to the person that I was when I ran seven marathons in seven days because I have not felt that confidence and invincibility since I did that challenge.”

Sam is working with trainers Marc and Alice Hocking at the Priory Gym who have made a four day training and healthy meal plan.

Mr Hocking said: “We are proud to be working with Sam on his 30 day challenge here at Priory Gym.

“Our main aim is to help rid Sam of his anxiety and depression and help him gain confidence through training in a friendly environment with many like minded people.

“I have no doubt that Sam will achieve the body he desires and will beat his anxiety and depression as he puts his all into everything he does and is a pleasure to train.”
