STROUD’S assistant town clerk is encouraging people to donate, or take, a new coat after seeing people shivering in the cold on her journey in to work.

Stroud Town Council is hosting a coat swap event on Friday January 27 where people can bring adult or children’s pre-loved coats, or simply pick up a new one free-of-charge if they don’t have one to swap.

Sheral Gardner, the assistant town clerk who came up with the idea, said a coat is an expensive item to buy, especially for growing families and the coat swap is a great way for members of the community to help other people.

“Driving to work early last week I saw a couple of people, with very small, worn out coats, shivering and felt really sorry for them,” she said.

“I have heard of a similar idea with clothes generally, but they are usually to raise funds. I would rather just see people warm.”

Anyone who had a new coat for Christmas, bought a new one in the sales, or just fancies something different, is asked to donate their old one.

Any are accepted as long as they are clean and presentable, with no stains or rips.

Donations can be dropped off at Stroud Town Council’s office by Thursday January 26.

The office is open from 10am to 1pm, Monday to Thursday.

Volunteers are invited to help sort the coats and staff would also like to hear from anyone who can lend clothes rails to hang the coats on. All are welcome to the coat swap which is being held at Stroud Town Council at 58 London Road from 10am to 1pm.

Anyone with questions can call 01453 762817.
