IN 1977 residents living close to the Besbury turning on the main Stroud-Cirencester road at Minchinhampton became concerned about the danger caused by fast moving traffic.

Residents told the SNJ that a number of accidents, some fatal, had occurred over the years, and walls were frequently hit.

Mrs Dorothy Welch, of ‘Hillcot’ in Cirencester Road had been involved in a petition which was handed to Stroud MP Anthony Kershaw, seeking a speed limit in the neighbourhood.

She said the garden wall at her home had been knocked down three times and there had been one fatality.

“All the world comes to Minchinhampton Common on a Saturday,” she said.

A spokesman for the County Surveyors department told the SNJ: “The fastest speed recorded was about 56mph.

“It is unlikely, due to the open countryside nature of this site that a 40mph limit would command any respect, and it would be too difficult to enforce.”

Minchinhampton Parish Council had been repeatedly told that there was not enough traffic using the road to warrant a lower speed.
