SCHOOLS throughout Stroud District have been dealt a mixed bag after a change to government funding.

Some have gained additional funds but a third of primaries and all secondaries have received a cut.

The government published its initial proposal to alter the national funding formula (NFF) in March 2016, local authorities now have until March 2017 to respond.

All eight of the district’s secondaries will receive cuts, with Marling School (-£74,000) and Thomas Keble (-£92,000) losing three per cent in funding, the highest cut possible under the scheme.

Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School in Wotton-under-Edge had the largest monetary reduction in funding with £117,000 (two per cent) cut from its £5,192,000 budget.

However two thirds of primary schools will receive additional funding, with notable gains from Coaley CofE (10 per cent), Sheepscombe (11 per cent), Oakridge Parochial (13 per cent), St. Andrew’s CofE (15 per cent) and Miserden CofE who had the largest gain in the county with a 24 per cent leap (£53,000).

Beech Green in Quedgeley received the highest cut in funding with a £42,000 loss, whereas the area’s secondary – Severn Vale School – has been handed a £43,000 increase.

The new formula allocates funding based on factors such the population, health and disability, low attainment and deprivation, the changes will be introduced in 2018/19.

Gloucestershire has dropped ten places in its average spend per pupil from 102 to 112, although it has increased it’s spending from £4,311.65 to £4,344.54.

Stroud MP and chairman of the education select committee Neil Carmichael said: “We all know the current system of school funding needs reform and Gloucestershire schools and MPs have long campaigned for this, which prompted the government’s consultation on a new formula.

“I have already met with a number of head teachers to discuss their concerns about the new proposed formula.

“Yesterday the education committee held an oral evidence session on school funding reform and we heard from the minister for schools, Nick Gibb MP.

“The role of select committees in parliament is to scrutinise and hold to account government policies and we took this opportunity to challenge in more detail the government’s proposals and also focused on the wider subject of the financial sustainability of schools.

“The issue of fairer funding for schools has always been a priority for me and I hope that through working together with teachers and governors we can ensure that the government addresses the concerns that have been raised in its consultation.”

Gloucestershire is set to gain £2.07million but in total the schools in Stroud District receive a funding a cut of £82,000.

The following details are for each school's current funding, followed by their proposed funds, the difference between the two followed by the percent change of their total budget.
