STROUD’S MP and a county councillor are among those countering proposals for mini-roundabouts on the A46 Bath Road junctions in Nailsworth after last month’s crash.

Neil Carmichael MP, county councillor Dorcas Binns (Con, Nailsworth) and Conservative county council candidate Emma Sims oppose the road safety measures.

They have spoken out in response to Cllr Steve Robinson’s proposal to install mini-roundabouts after a car tipped on to its side and skidded down Butcher Hill’s Lane near the junction with Bath Road and Old Bristol Road.

Cllr Binns, said: “The proposal seems rather drastic, it would certainly slow down traffic to a halt and cause a real congestion issue.

“I am very aware of speeding concerns in our rural towns - a 20mph limit, Speed Indicator Devices (SIDS) and re- surfacing of the A46 are three significant schemes to address speeding and volume of traffic, road noise and fumes.”

Neil Carmichael has warned against a knee-jerk reaction as they are not the way forward for effective measures to control speed, if speed is the issue.

He said: “I want to see resurfacing of the A46 and appropriate speed restrictions. These are the measures we need to improve the road safety in Nailsworth.”

At the time of the accident - which left a young boy in a wheelchair trapped in what was believed to be his family’s car - residents called for improved visibility on the junction and to fix the Vehicle Activated Sign, which has since been repaired.

Conservative candidate for Nailsworth Emma Sims, said: “Addressing the speed, volume of traffic, and the environmental impact is really important.

“I would really prefer to have a conversation with the A46 Action Group, residents in Nailsworth, who have been instrumental in working with Dorcas and the county council, to look into road calming and significantly with a 20mph through Nailsworth.”

Resident Brian Jayes feels that the proposed mini roundabouts would create problems with traffic and increase noise and fumes.
