KIND-HEARTED horse-rider Harry Lewis, nine, has vowed to spend his weekends picking up litter in Stonehouse.

Harry who lives in Hardwicke, rides his pony down Standish Lane most weekends and has become upset at the amount of rubbish dropped on the floor.

Deciding to take matters into his own hands Harry wrote a letter to the residents of Standish Lane pleading for help.

He said: “Dear users of Standish Lane, I ride my pony most weekends and it makes me sad to see lots of litter everywhere.

“Today I decided to do something about it and went litter picking.

“I wanted to do the whole lane but only got up to the large grey building and had to stop because I filled my two bin bags up.”

Within the rubbish there were pizza boxes, drinks cans, sweet wrappers and more.

Harry’s mother Sam Lewis is extremely proud of her son even if it does take up most of her weekends.

She said: “Harry goes to eco club at Hardwicke Primary School where the children learn about recycling and the damage litter can do to the environment.

“Every time we go out riding Harry notices the litter on the floor and he keeps badgering me to let him pick it up and eventually I caved.

“He noticed a single crocus growing the other day but was sad because nobody could see it under all the rubbish.”

Sam is very disappointed with the state of the roads and is even more upset with what is being dropped.

“A lot of the rubbish is energy drinks and bars which probably means people are dropping the rubbish when they are on a run or a cycle.

“Why can’t people just hold onto the rubbish until they see a bin?”

Harry’s work has not gone unnoticed and after seeing his letter on social media Helping Hand in Ledbury have donated a litter picker, protective gloves and hi-vis jacket to help the clean-up.

There has also been a stream of positive comments on Facebook praising Harry.

Harry will be back on Standish Lane this weekend and he has asked people to make his job easier by putting rubbish in the bin not on the floor.
