A SITE which was used by travellers and saw “disgusting” amounts of rubbish dumped has now become a hot-spot for fly-tipping, say residents.

Last month the Argus reported that smashed up caravans, rubbish bags, human waste, food and other items had been left strewn on Welsh Government-owned land at Tatton Road, Newport.

Near-by residents are now worrying that the site, which they claim is still covered in rubbish, is attracting “unwelcome” fly-tippers.

Hashim Sujeeun, who lives in Lliswerry, said he was “angry” at the situation.

“I am so angry because the rubbish has been there since January,” said Mr Sujeeun, “and nothing has been sorted.

“I work on the industrial estate and first thing in the morning you see loads of people dropping off their rubbish outside and on the site.

“Fly-tippers make me angry.

“The place is full with rats because of the fly-tippers and rubbish.”

He added: “I said last month that it needed sorting and I’ve been ignored.

“I can’t see why it’s taking so long to sort.”

Pat Jones, who lives close to the site, said the site is “disgusting”.

She said: “I was one of the people who complained about it.

“It’s bad when loads of rubbish is getting dumped and nothing is being done.”

She added: “I feel like going over there and cleaning it myself.”

Andrew Cole said that him and his wife previously warned of “problems coming to the area” if the rubbish was left.

Mr Cole said: “People are exploiting the situation. Simple.

“People can see the disgusting area and think it’s fine to now throw their rubbish there too.

“The site must be cleared ASAP.”

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “In 2012, a family of travellers moved to the Tatton Road site and were given tolerated status by Welsh ministers whilst Newport County Council developed their proposals for traveller provision across the local authority.

A spokeswoman said: “Our understanding is that another traveller family subsequently moved onto the site.

“The state of the site has deteriorated significantly in recent months and we believe that the original traveller family have now left and that a number of members of the second family remain.

“We are currently taking legal steps to seek to gain full possession of the site so we can begin a clean up process as soon as possible.”
