A DECISION on the future of the Warehouse Nightclub in Stroud has been scheduled to take place on Monday, March 6.

Stroud District Council is carrying out a full review of the London Road venue’s licence after the death of a 24-year-old man on the premises on Sunday, February 5.

Artillery gunner from Stroud Jack Mitchell died an alleged assault in the top floor of the bar area in the early hours of the morning.

A 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed to return to court on May 3, pending further inquiries.

After the incident police requested the council suspend the club’s licence for an interim period while an investigation was carried out.

This meant the Warehouse could not sell alcoholic beverages or play music and has remained closed since.

Now a Licensing Hearing will make a decision on what action, if any, to take against the club.

This meeting will be attended by three members, one of which will chair the meeting; a legal representative of the council; a committee clerk and an officer of the licensing team.

The meeting is an opportunity for anyone who requested the review or made relevant representations including the licence holder to address the Sub-Committee directly.

At the review hearing members must consider all the evidence and then decide from the following alternatives:

  • Take no action
  • Modify or add conditions of the licence this can include modifying hours
  • Exclude a licensable activity from the scope of a licence
  • Remove the designated premises supervisor
  • Suspend the licence for a period not exceeding three months
  • Revoke the licence

If the Warehouse does not accept the decision of the committee it may appeal to the Magistrates Court.

If, in the most extreme hypothetical scenario, the Warehouse was to close, in the next few months Stroud would be left without a single nightclub, as underground venue Twisted Fix on Nelson Street will be closing its doors for the last time on Sunday April 2.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 10am.
