A TEAM of wannabe adventurers from a Gloucestershire deafness charity will be attempting the three-peak challenge to raise £8,000 for those with hearing difficulties.

They will be raising money for Gloucestershire Deaf Association (GDA) a charity who provide emotional and practical support to thousands of people living in Gloucestershire who are born or have become deaf and are British Sign Language (BSL) users.

The three peak challenge is no easy feat, the team will attempt to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdown in 24 hours, their efforts – including travel time - will start on Friday, May 19 and finish on Sunday, May 21.

Spokesman for GDA Gemma Sills said: “What makes this particular challenge all the more impressive is that over half of our 18-strong team are profoundly deaf.

“They will have to contend with the possibility of dust from the trails getting into their cochlear implants and hearing aids, making them highly likely to break – when this happens it will not only remove the slightest bit of hearing they have, it will also bring the added danger of imbalance.

“Many people refer to deafness as ‘simply not being able to hear’, but in fact, the biggest disability people with hearing loss face is communication.

“Day-to-day communication with family and friends; the cashier in the supermarket, doctors and bus drivers can be a constant struggle.

“Society’s lack of understanding of deafness is what truly ‘disables’ a person with hearing loss.”

GDA works with local businesses, services and community groups to educate them on being deaf aware, as well as supporting the deaf community to become confident and take control of their own lives.

John Mancini said: “It's great to see both hearing and deaf people to work together as a team and to support GDA so they can provide a better access for deaf people.

Peter Maynard said: “The buzz of completing a challenge involving both hearing and deaf people for a charity that is there to help those with hearing loss is immense.”
