COUNCILLORS in Stroud have condemned yesterday’s fatal attack in Westminster and called for unity, compassion and steadfast conviction in democratic values in the face of terror.

Speaking on behalf of all councillors at Ebley Mill, Norman Kay, chairman of Stroud District Council, said: “I want to express what we all feel this morning.

“Across the Stroud district our thoughts go out today to the innocent victims of the Westminster attack, and to their families. We are saddened and outraged.

“The belief in our democratic values, in the harmony and tolerance of our society will never waver, and is cherished by all at Stroud District Council.

“We take pride in being a welcoming and inclusive nation of many different ethnicities and religions.”

Stroud District Cllr Debbie Young, Conservative councillor for Chalford, said on social media: "We are British, we will stand together against this terror attack, whatever religion, faith or belief. We will support the victims and survivors.

"My dad was a police officer, he served his community in Cheshire, but everyone fallen affects all of us."

Lesley Williams, Labour leader at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Last council meeting of the four year term ended abruptly with the horrendous news of the shocking attack in Westminster.

“Our thoughts go to all those affected. The bravery and compassion shown by our public services is humbling - they are always there when needed.”
