AFTER an absence of more than 10 years, international environment organisation Greenpeace is looking to rekindle its presence in Stroud.

To spread the word and rebuild the membership, organisers have put together an ‘Introduction to Greenpeace’ event at the Centre for Science and Art, 13 Lansdown on Sunday, April 9, from 3 till 5pm.

Mark Epton, who is leading the new group, said he wants to see the campaign regain the foothold it once had in the town.

“The Stroud Greenpeace group is being rekindled after a long absence,” he said. “It used to be one of the most effective campaign groups in the country and we hope it will be again.

“We’ve organized an ‘Introduction to Greenpeace’ event, so that people can find out more about Greenpeace and how they can get involved.”

He said there will be short films showing the work Greenpeace does today, as well as first-hand accounts of what it means to be a Greenpeace campaigner and activist.

There will then also be a taster session in nonviolent direct action – such as protests, sit-ins, street performance, civil disobedience and blockades- as well as tea and cake.

“We hope that people will join the Stroud group and help us protect our environment,” added Mark.

“Our next campaign is focussed on ending plastic waste in the ocean – we’ll be going after a big corporate villain.”

The event is free but donations are appreciated. For more info contact Mark Eptonon 07986 271797.
