MORE than £3,000 has been raised for a brave Stroud shopkeeper after he was brutally attacked and run over by a gang of thugs when he tried to protect a Polish teenager they were assaulting.

Two separate fundraising accounts have been set up for Amo Singh after the brutal assault outside his shop, Premier Stores in Cashes Green on Sunday night.

Amo, 33, was hit with crowbars, driven into at full speed and then run over as he lay defenceless on the ground.

He and his wife Sandy had seen six boys and two girls – some of whom were armed with crowbars and baseball bats – arrive in two cars and begin attacking the 15-year-old Polish boy, who was with his girlfriend.

Amo grabbed a baseball bat to defend himself and went outside to try to protect the boy, but the gang then turned on him, raining down punches and blows with crowbars and baseball bats.

One of them then drove a car at Amo, sending him flying into the air. Others then hit him with crowbars and kicked him while he lay on the ground, before the driver reversed over him. The attackers then fled in the two cars.

Amazingly, Amo survived the attack and is now recovering at home. He suffered a head wound which required stitches, bruises all over his body, and needed two metal plates inserted in a broken wrist.

Amo’s wife, Sandy, 33, said the attackers hurled racial abuse at him and that she believed the 15-yesar-old boy was targeted because he’s Polish.

Sandy shared CCTV footage of the attack, filmed by the store’s cameras, with the SNJ in the hope of helping to find the culprits.

After hearing of the horrific attack, two people set up fundraising accounts to help Amo and his family.

One, created by a man named Peter from Stroud, has raised over £1,000 so far.

Another, launched by Maureen Ojok, has generated more than £2,000.

Maureen, 38, lives in Leeds and has no connection to Stroud but said Amo’s story had “touched” her.

“I’m originally from London and black and it was the racial element to the attack that touched me,” she told the SNJ. “The Polish community has been really supportive and donated lots.”

Today, Sandy told the SNJ: "Me and my husband would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us through this tough time -  thank you to every for their kind words, it's really appreciated."

She also shared a picture of the cards and flowers they have received from well-wishers.

Gloucestershire Police continues to investigate the attack, which Sandy called an “attempted murder”, but there have been no arrests so far.
