Stroud & District Conservative Women's Luncheon Club: The history of pub signs with Angela Panrucker
The Chairman Wendy Cannon welcomed members and guests to the April lunch.
The speaker was Angela Panrucker who gave a most interesting talk and slide show on the history of pub signs.
A lot of our pub signs go back to Roman times, and nearly all over three groups, religion, royalty and nature.
A pub sign is alway a good indicator of what went on in the local area, hence the reason Gloucestershire has a lot of pub signs relating to the wool trade and sheep.
Angela showed us well over 300 signs but told us she has about 7,000 more at home, it has take her a long time to accrue so many and a lot of travelling, sadly a lot of these are now gone because of so many pubs closing.
Belinda Ricketts thanked Angela for her wonderful talk.
Members were reminded that the May lunch will start with the AGM at 11am and the lunch at the usual time.
