NEIL Carmichael has responded to David Drew's comments regarding election expenses saying "I've done nothing wrong."

Speaking to the SNJ after Theresa May announced the election, Mr Drew said: "The first question we will want Neil Carmichael's answer to is how can Stroud's Conservative MP be a candidate when he is currently under police investigation for election fraud."

Mr Carmichael responded: "There is an ongoing police investigation and as such I'd prefer not to comment other than to say I've done nothing wrong and I acted honestly and properly throughout the election campaign 2 years ago."

A raft of Tory MPs are being investigated by the Police for possible election fraud in the 2015 General Election and Mr Drew questions whether his rival, who beat him to the post for a second time in 2015, shouldn't be a candidate for the Stroud seat.

The investigation centres on whether costs to transport and accommodate bus-loads of Conservative activists to marginal constituencies in Gloucestershire should have been declared by candidates.

It comes amid allegations that the Conservative Party may have breached election spending rules in the run up to polling day last year.

Mr Drew, who had previously said he would not stand again, was rushed into campaign mode by Theresa May’s surprise call for a general election and has applied to be the Labour candidate.
