GOING into the last election the Greens were not expected to win in Stroud but they performed well considering their low starting point.

Candidate Sarah Lunnon, a Green county councillor, achieved just under 2,800 votes - which was almost double the 2010 result.

However, this equated to just 4.6 per cent of the vote which meant losing the deposit.

This was still slightly higher than the national average for the party of 3.8 per cent.

The Greens fielded more candidates than ever before, having a representative in 575 constituencies, however they still only won one seat - Caroline Lucas in Brighton Pavilion.

Ms Lunnon is standing again - and is hoping to entice ‘Remain’ voters.

“This is basically a second referendum,” she said.

“Theresa May is seeking a mandate to throw us off the Brexit cliff for a little island, a 1950s backward vision of Britain.

We don’t have to agree to it.

“The Green Party has a positive vision for the future of this country, a fairer more equal society and a tolerant, outward looking Britain.”
