TODAY is the last day to register to vote in the general election.

The deadline for registering to vote is 11.59pm tonight and it can be quickly completed at gov.uk/register-to-vote.

All you need is your national insurance number.

Stroud District Council is urging residents to make sure that they are registered to vote in the general election on June 8.

SDC are also offering paper registration forms that can be found on their website or requested by phone or email.

Whilst 81,000 polling cards have been dispatched to the district’s registered voters over the last two weeks, the council is keen to ensure that anyone entitled to vote does not miss out.

David Hagg, Stroud District Council chief executive and Acting Returning Officer for the elections, said: “With a high-profile general election taking place in a few weeks, I would urge people to register sooner rather than later as we are always inundated with last minute requests.

“You can't vote if you're not registered, and contrary to what some people believe, you won't be automatically registered if you pay council tax.

“We urge all residents to ensure they are on the electoral roll as soon as possible in order to avoid any disappointment.”

The council is emphasising that anyone who has just moved to the district, or moved house within the district can still register, it is not too late.

Residents can print a registration form at www.stroud.gov.uk/elections, complete and send in to the Elections Team at Stroud District Council.

It is also possible to request a registration form by contacting the Stroud District Council elections office either by email at elections@stroud.gov.uk or by calling 01453 754886 during office hours.

The deadline for postal vote application forms, or to amend or cancel a postal vote, is 5pm on Tuesday, May 23.

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote, i.e having someone place a vote on your behalf, is a week later, at 5pm on Wednesday, May 31.
