SHORTWOOD captain Matt Bennett insists leaving the club he served for more than a decade was a tough decision.

The 29-year-old left-back has left Shortwood United to join Paul Collicutt's Evesham.

Bennett said: β€œIt was a very tough decision to leave Shortwood, a club I have been part of for over a decade. We had some great sides over the years, which I feel privileged to of been a part of. Some great cup-runs most notably reaching the FA Cup first round against Port Vale.”

Bennett almost joined Bath City two years ago and is now relishing the chance of a crack at helping Evesham challenge at the top end of the Southern League table.

He added: β€œI've had various offers over the past few seasons however when Evesham came in I felt this was the right time to move on. I'm hungry for success and having played with and against some of the Evesham players, they definitely have the pedigree to move forward into the Premier Division and challenge on the next level. Colly and Gerry (Oldham, assistant manager) have big ambition for the club and hopefully I can play my part in challenging for the title this season."
