COMMUNITIES in Newport came together in a multi-cultural celebration of Africa yesterday.
The event at Rodney Parade marking Africa Day saw hundreds from the 54 countries forming Africa, many wearing clothes from their homeland, enjoyed music, food and fun.
Activities for youngsters included face painting and a bouncy castle, while attendees included at the day-long event were Lord Peter Hain, who was minister of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs between 1999 and 2001, and representatives from Gwent Police.
Organiser Robert Muza of the Zimbabwe Newport Volunteering Association said he was pleased by how well the event had gone, despite some rainy weather.
“Everyone is represented here,” he said.
“We’ve got people coming from all over.
“It’s just about bringing people together.”
Africa Day is a yearly commemoration of the independence of the continent from colonial rule.
