PROTESTERS against the Javelin Park incinerator have used temporary spray paint to get their message across to Gloucestershire County Council.

Shire Hall was spray-painted with the word "No!!" during the protest yesterday.

Activist group Rising Up pledged 'acts of civil disobedience' at Gloucestershire County Council to voice their opposition to the incinerator contract at Javelin Park.

Those taking part claim that the planned incinerator is a "grotesque waste of money".

A small group of protesters gathered at Gloucestershire County Council yesterday and sprayed graffiti on the walls of the offices to launch a wider series of events to come.

JoJo Mehta from Stroud said: "Every area of the Council's budget has been slashed - except for waste, which is going up because of this awful contract.

"Our public money will literally go up in toxic smoke."

Rising Up protester from Stroud, Dr. Gail Bradbrook added: "History shows us that on some occasions people are only listened to, by those who are supposed to be acting in our best interests, when they resort to civil disobedience.

"We don’t do this lightly, we are willing to face consequences.

"We have also used chalk spray and poster paint which does come off easily.”

GCC have always stood by the incinerator and argue that it will save taxpayers over £100m.

They also state the new facility will make enough clean electricity to power 25,000 homes and reduce carbon emissions by 40,000 tonnes.
