AT a time when cuts are being made to many schools across the Stroud District the SNJ take a look back at a more prosperous year.

IN 2007 a new chapter in the history of Stroud High School was beginning with the opening of its new £2.7 million classroom block.

For years pupils had been taking lessons in tired and deteriorating building known as the ‘old corridor’, which was originally built during the First World War.

The new block contained 15 classrooms, a kitchen and a library and resources area.

Speaking in 2007 school bursar Andrew Baldwin said: “It will give generations to come, nice, purpose built facilities.

“The key element is that it has provided 15 large classrooms and new IT facilities.

“We will now have interactive whiteboards in every classroom, which I think makes us unique in the county in that respect.”

The new corridor which was demolished in August 2005 contained eight classrooms and several temporary classrooms were removed soon afterwards.

Stroud High School went through a mini transition in 2007, with Tim Withers taking over as the first male headteacher.
