Eastcombe WI: A Wimbledon talk with Brian Partridge and a talk on Women's Rights with Izzy Danby

IN JUNE, just before Wimbledon, we took a glimpse into the experiences of officials at Wimbledon via a talk served up by Brian Partridge – aptly named, ‘You Cannot Be Serious’.

At the July meeting we were most impressed by a talk given by ex Thomas Keble student, Izzy Danby, who, along with representatives from all over the world, had attended the March 2017 Women’s Rights Conference in New York.

Izzy made a confident presentation on her experiences in New York, and in a controlled manner expressed her passion for the need to strive globally for women’s economic empowerment, and the necessity to end all forms of discrimination against women.

Truly inspirational to see and hear the benefits of education/experience used by this young woman to formulate and eloquently and passionately express her beliefs.

The National Star Centre at Ullenwood is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and Sally Gillespie came along to give us an insight into the scope of provision at the centre.

The charity had 10 students in 1967, rising over 50 years to 1,500 students aged 16+.

Opportunities are tailored to the individual to enable young people with disabilities to fully realize their aspirations.

Members have enjoyed trips, walks, Thoroughly Modern Millie at Bristol Hippodrome, and other craft and social events, with more planned.
