On the future of the Merrywalks Shopping Centre in Stroud.

Posted by BobinStroud: The whole structure needs looking at, the car park is shockingly poor. There needs to be a holistic approach to any plans, all additions and upgrades done on the building to date have just been plonked on without much thought. The building feels like one mistake or missed opportunity attached onto another, knock it all down and start again.

Posted by Gothamite: Depressing drab place. Demolish it and start again. Perhaps Mr Vince would like to have a go on the design!

Posted by snr1: Maybe they could put an Aldi in there:) Frankiefromwales: It’s all a conspiracy to keep Aldi out of Stroud by making false promises Posted by Pisces123: SDC you are making yourselves a complete laughing stock! You have been ‘persuaded’ by this developer to delay granting permission to Aldi, and still the developer is not in a position to proceed. Not their fault of course, enter stage right Santander! Come on get real!

Posted by vox populi vox dei: Having lived in Australia for many years before returning home to Stroud several things have shocked us. Merrywalks for me is just a missed opportunity it needs to be restyled to make it a pleasant place to visit. All shopping centres in OZ are sealed and air-conditioned so that they provide a comfortable temperature whilst walking around. Open areas in the shopping centres are used to the full offering pleasant seating and outdoor style pavement cafes. On cold wet days in Stroud Merrywalks would become the place to shop should the aforesaid be adopted. Another observation is the approach to the centre next to Poundland is drab and needs a resurface. Stroud does have a charm on Fridays and Saturday when it comes alive with the market,it needs to develop this further.

Merrywalks could house a market in one of the empty large shops for instance. I know everyone appears to want Aldi to be allowed to build a supermarket out of town but we would prefer to see a M&S food outlet open in Stroud perhaps in Merrywalks.

Posted by bertie bertie: Merrywalks just needs a lick of paint, a few new signs and to fill those empty shops.

Posted by Barry-Stroud: Couldn’t agree more.
