Mr Park’s Corner
THE corner of George Street with King Street parade is one of the parts of Stroud most altered over the last century.
The Edwardian postcard shows the drapery store of Sidney B Park decorated for the visit of the County Agricultural Show to Stroud in 1907.
Mr Park also had a shop in the High Street at roughly the same period.
In celebration of the Show coming to Stroud – as it also did in 1892 and 1912 – premises throughout the town were extensively decorated.
In addition five arches were erected in the streets.
During World War One Mr Park’s son, Herbert Sidney, was killed.
In 1927 Sidney gave the land for the Park Gardens in Slad Road for the enjoyment of the people of Stroud in memory of his son.
Shortly after the war ended Mr Park’s business closed.
Following demolition of the building, the Midland Bank premises were put up, later to become HSBC.
