Forest Green Rovers lifted their first piece of silverware this season, albeit a FIFA competition at Smyths Toys.

Forwards Omar Bugiel and Shamir Mullings headed to Gloucester on Sunday to take part in the event that pitted four Gloucestershire-based teams against each other on the popular video game, which was released last Friday.

Ahead of Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy clash, the FGR duo went up against Cheltenham Town’s Kevin Dawson and Alex Davey, as well as Gloucester City’s Joe Parker and Jamie Edge, while Gloucester Rugby’s Billy Burns and Paddy McAllister put down the oval shaped ball to pick up a controller.

It was the perfect start for Rovers who, as Real Madrid, brushed aside the Gloucester City pair, playing as PSG, with a 5-1 victory in front of a good crowd of fans sporting Forest Green shirts, with one even being invited to join Bugiel after the fourth goal went in.

Mullings and Bugiel were given a scare in their second encounter, playing as Manchester United, as they were pegged back twice by the Gloucester Rugby players, who opted for Real Madrid, before going on to secure a 3-2 win.

The final game of the group stage saw Rovers face local rivals Cheltenham, both teams playing as themselves, with FGR added to the game for the first time this season, and a late strike from Town saw the game go to penalties, with the scores level at 2-2, which Cheltenham won 3-2.

It was a repeat of that fixture in the final and having agreed to use random sides, with a limit of five skips, Cheltenham landed on Chelsea while Rovers had to settle for Southampton.

However, it was Mullings and Bugiel who cruised to a 4-1 win to be crowned ‘Champions of Gloucestershire’ to the delight of the supporters.

“It was great to get around the fans,” said Mullings, who stayed behind to play some of the younger fans who attended the event.

“I know it’s only a FIFA event, but to see quite a few people here today, it’s nice to know that they are still backing us and it’s a good feeling for us.”
