STROUD District Council leader Steve Lydon keeps you up to date with council matters

As I’ve mentioned in my diary before, the whole shape of government finance is changing.

You may not be aware that currently councils collect business rates locally then hand the money over to central government which in turn redistributes it across the country.

The government is now considering what it would be like if councils simply kept the business rates they raised instead. We will debate this at the full council meeting, and put forward a case for being part of the pilot scheme.

Now that the canal restoration between Stonehouse and Bowbridge is just about complete we felt the time was right to celebrate the huge role played by volunteers. Since 2013 volunteers have put in over 138,000 hours, valued at nearly £1.7million.

Very simply, The canal wouldn’t have been restored without their help, So this Friday we’re having a celebration at Ebley Wharf to which all canal volunteers have been invited. It’s a small thank you which will never match their huge contribution.

You may have seen adverts in last week’s press about the council’s review of the Stroud District Local Plan.

This is about where homes, jobs and infrastructure such as shops, schools and play areas should be located within our district over the next few decades.

Asking local residents their views is an essential element of the local plan, so do go along to the one near you to let us know your thoughts.

The first of 10 events will be held at Wotton-under-Edge Town Hall on Saturday from 9.30am-12.30pm, with others planned throughout the district.

In three weeks’ time we’re hosting a careers event, with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, aimed at anyone who is looking for advice on jobs, careers and education opportunities.

Last year’s event was a great success, attracting over 600 visitors and we expect this one to be even more popular.

It takes place between 4.30pm and 7.30pm at Stratford Park Leisure Centre in Stroud. Universities, local colleges, around 50 employers, training providers and JobCentre Plus will be on hand.

It’s a great opportunity to talk to experts who can provide a comprehensive guide to future employment and give advice on further study/skills development and volunteering options.

Some organisations will also be taking the opportunity to advertise their current vacancies.

I think you’ll be impressed by the range and number of sectors which will be represented. You can follow them on twitter @stroudambitions but if you’re not online or call 01453 754 296.
