A NEW events and party planning company based in Stroud has made a remarkable discovery.

The famous barman Harry Craddock who worked at the world-renowned Art Deco bar at The Savoy in London was actually born in Stroud.

Becky Thomas, one of directors of the newly formed Wild Boar Gin Lounge, just happened to stumble across the information.

“Our company came together quite naturally last summer. After closing my shop in Stroud I thought it would be a nice way to thank all of my customers and suppliers by opening the premises as a gin bar over the Fringe Festival weekend,” said Becky.

“The response was incredible, the shop was filled every evening with dancing and people having the best time, while drinking specially-blended drinks which used small-batch gin from local distilleries.

“It seemed a natural progression to look at running more pop-up gin events around the area.

"While I was researching gin recipes I came across the astounding fact that the author of The Savoy Cocktail Book, and revered barman Harry Craddock was actually born in Stroud.”

Mr Craddock often referred to as the Godfather of the Martini famously proclaimed cocktails to be ‘the finest appetisers known.’

He became the first celebrity endorser of Bacardi rum, then faded to obscurity and was buried in a pauper’s grave.

Original copies of his Savoy Cocktail Book, penned in 1930, now fetch over £2000.

Wild Boar Gin Lounge will be holding another event tomorrow from 7.30pm at JRool Bistro in Stroud.

There will be a 1920s theme to celebrate Harry Craddock’s achievements.

Staff will be show-casing some of his infamous cocktail recipes such as the French 75.

The event will include live music with a swing jazz and Balkan gypsy theme, as well as DJ sets from local DJs Jagdish Patel and Ben Vacara.
