A CASCADE of around 7,000 knitted poppies has been wrapped around the clock tower in Nailsworth.

The display will commemorate the soldiers who gave their lives during the First World War.

Margaret Marshall was the driving force behind this year’s display, aiming to again produce a fitting remembrance tribute, much like the Nailsworth Women's Institute achieved in the town last year.

Jane Luff and Bob Warner were instrumental in helping to create the poppies and attaching them to the netting.

Knowing it would be a big task, Margaret they for help creating the poppies and members of the public were able to pick up a template pattern in the town.

There was also an appeal for red wool and black buttons, which were delivered to Nailsworth Town Information Centre.

Furthermore, a number of Stroud and Nailsworth firefighters stopped off in Nailsworth last night (October 24) to help wrap the netting around the clock tower, which is also a war memorial.

Mayor of Nailsworth Jonathan Duckworth was delighted with the effort of the whole community and believes it will act as a fitting tribute.

“The town of Nailsworth made a huge sacrifice during the Great War,” said Cllr Duckworth.

“This extraordinary display really is a fitting tribute to commemorate the lives of those who died.”

A small group of people including the mayor of Nailsworth and the mayor or deputy Mayor of Lèves, which is the French town twinned with Nailsworth, will lay wreaths by the clock tower.

This will take place at 10.55am on Remembrance Day, Saturday, November 11 and will be followed by two minutes silence.

Members of the public are welcome to go along and pay tribute.
